Shackles BS 3032 (high tensile), BS 3551 (alloy), BS 6994 (grade M)
There are 2 basic types of shackles to be encountered offshore.
-
“D” shackle will be found with a safety pin, a bolt and safety pin arrangement or a screw pin.
-
“Bow” shackle will be found with a safety pin, a bolt and safety pin arrangement or a screw pin.
A bow shackle is generally used where more than 1 attachment is to be used on the shackle; the “D” shackle is predominately used for joining 2 pieces of equipment.
Do not use any other type of material as a pin for the shackle other than those designed, certified for the purpose. When using a safety pin type shackle ensure that a split pin is used to prevent the bolt from working free. Never place the slings on to the shackle pin as this will crush the slings, always place the shackle with the pin uppermost, with the sling eyes in the body of the shackle.
